Benzema: Play bad 90 minutes, score a goal and be the man of the match? I don't want to be that kind of a player

In one of the most surprising turn of events of footballing 2021, Karim Benzema is back in the France setup. Now, Real Madrid's striker will have a chance to prove himself on the stage where his skill set is particularly important: in the not-so-drilled scene of national football.

Speaking on his return, Benzema also touched on the kind of player he wanted to become and his values in football.

"Football has become a game where players can play bad for 90 minutes and then score a goal and be called Man of the Match and get the spotlight. I don’t want to be that kind of a player. I have always wanted to be a model attacker. Someone who knows how to score, but also to organise play, who knows how to play with the ball at his feet. One touch, make movements, stay in the box. A bit of everything," said Benzema.

The 33-year-old must have had his head ringing as he was talk of the continent, and his former manager Jose Mourinho gave interesting insights of him. Talking about how Benz is one of the rare team-minded attackers in the game.

"The best compliment you can give to Karim Benzema is that Cristiano Ronaldo was in love with him at Real Madrid. And for Cristiano to be in love with another attacking player means he does a lot for Cristiano — and he does a lot for every attacking player that plays around him. Karim is probably the only No 9 I know that is not selfish in his game. His vision is amazing, the way he enjoys his football is to play with lots of freedom. I can compare him with Harry Kane also in this sense," said Mourinho.

With the way Benzema is willing to work for his teammates, Mourinho believes his inclusion in the France setup will vastly improve the side and especially help the other attackers such as Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe.

"I would say Harry scores more goals, probably has more of that killer instinct than Karim but Karim, as a player, is absolutely amazing and when you look to the French team and you imagine Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe playing with him, I think it can be something great. Karim will bring the best out of Mbappe, just as he did in Madrid with Cristiano."
