Six players equalled or surpassed the top goalscorer's tally from the 2008/2009 season in the just-finished campaign of the English top flight. Only six times in the past 15 years has the top goalscorer finished with a higher tally than the current reigning sharpshooter. One of those was his own doing. The top Premier League goalscorers in the 2023/2024 season tell a valid and vivid story of the entire campaign.

Looking at their final tallies and recalling some of the key matches that propelled them into this elite group, we take a look at Premier League top goalscorers.

Amazingly, 30 players have scored goals in the double-digits. But here are the eight best, with Bukayo Saka, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Jarrod Bowen barely not making the cut at 16 goals scored.

Heung-Min Son (Tottenham Hotspur) - 17 goals

Heung-Min Son

The joint-top goalscorer from the 2021/2022 season (when he counted to 23) is followed on this list of Premier League's best scorers in 2023/2024 by the man with whom he shared the award. Son already scored 17 in his career previously, in the 2020/2021 season. What makes this feat amazing, is that he did it with a new manager and without Harry Kane. Son bagged 10 assists too, across a total of 35 games.

Opening up his salvo with a hat-trick against Burnley in September, then scoring a brace against biggest rivals Arsenal in a draw, but from on then scored only in singles. Against City, Arsenal again, and Liverpool, showing he is a big-game player.

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) - 18 goals

Mohamed Salah

Mo Salah won the Premier League's top goalscorer of the season award three times, sharing it in 2018/2019 and 2021/2022, but reigning supreme in the 2017/2018 campaign when he shook the net 32 times. This has been Salah's weakest return in his seven seasons with LFC, which is saying more about his class than of his form. Especially considering he also made 10 assists this term.

The Egyptian also played the third-fewest games out of all these sharpshooters listed, only 32. He has been a bit more quiet in derby games, scoring only against United, Arsenal, and Tottenham within the big six.

Dominic Solanke (Bournemouth) - 19 goals

Dominic Solanke

One of the least expected inclusions on this list of Premier League's top goalscorers for the season. Certainly, the player representing the least well-off club. Also, Dominic Solanke's previous best tally in the PL was six goals. Scoring a mere three in the 2019/2020 season with 32 games. This time around, he played in every single possible game of the season, recording three assists too.

Opening up his tally in the first game of the season, Solanke's biggest scalp was that of Manchester United in a 2:2 draw. The 26-year-old scored a brace against Newcastle United and a hat-trick against Nottingham Forrest.

Phil Foden (Manchester City) - 19 goals

Phil Foden

Player of the season certainly, because not only has Phil Foden scored 19 goals in the 35 Premier League matches he played, he also recorded eight assists. City's still-young English star has truly upgraded after several seasons of visible stagnation. In the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons, he had an identical tally - 28 games, nine goals, five assists. Marginally stepping up in the previous year with 11 goals and five assists in 32 matches.

Actually, the 2023/2024 Premier League season might be remembered as Phil Foden's coming-out party. Outshining even the big man who is - spoiler alert - ranked number one this year too. Coming into 2024, Foden had only five league goals, pushing into the next gear with 14 in the second part of the season. Brentford and Aston Villa suffered hat-tricks, Manchester United, Brighton, and eventually West Ham on the last matchday all took in braces from Foden. Foden got on the scoresheet against United and Spurs in the first half of the campaign too.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) - 19 goals

Ollie Watkins

Now a fully proven Premier League striker, Ollie Watkins truly blossomed and showed that many players truly enter their prime at the age of 28. Not only did Aston Villa's primary striker score - he also recorded 13 assists! More than any other Premier League player this term. Not just a striker too, even more than Kevin De Bruyne (who did play in only 18 games though).

Watkins has recorded double digits in scoring for all of his four Premier League seasons, all with Villa, and after bagging in 14, 11, and 15, he improved on his goalscoring. While being consistent on a similar rate, playing in 37 matches. Watkins recorded a hat-trick against Brighton and scored in games with Chelsea, Spurs, and Arsenal.

Alexander Isak (Newcastle United) - 21 goals

Alexander Isak

Playing the fewest number of games out of all these top Premier League goalscorers in the 2023/2024 campaign, Isak has had a bitter-sweet season. Personally, he has bested his personal recorded in any top flight (previous best 17 with Sociedad in La Liga), but Newcastle has ranked lower on the table, missing out on Europe.

In his debut season, Isak scored 10 goals in 22 matches, this time around groin injuries kept him out of six games, plus the two he missed for other reasons. Isak opened the season with a brace against West Ham, and scored a goal against Chelsea (twice), Liverpool, City, and Spurs were blessed with a brace.

Cole Palmer (Chelsea) - 22 goals

Cole Palmer

Quickly becoming one of the best penalty kick takers in the world, as he has never missed a spot kick yet, Cole Palmer scored nine times from the white dot this season. Besides the reigning champ and top goalscorer, he is the only player on this list to have scored a poker this season, putting four past Everton. Palmer also had a stunning game against Manchester United, scoring a hat-trick.

Palmer is also the youngest man on the list, only 22, and in his first season with a new club. Furthermore, it's the first proper campaign for him overall. Having previously only played 479 minutes of Premier League football. In 34 games (one of which for City), Palmer also recorded 11 assists, for a total of 33 goal involvements. If he continues on a similar mark, the €47,000,000 transfer fee would look like a steal, especially for an English talent.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City) - 27 goals

Erling Haaland

Back-to-back Premier League top goalscorer which has been achieved only by Salah and Harry Kane in the last 15 years. While in Mo's repeat, he had to share both trophies, Erling and Kane were undisputed. For Haaland, the title of the undisputed goalscorer only stands in numbers - where it should matter the most - but he has been criticised this season.

Unrightfully, at least in the Premier League, as he scored against the big ones - a brace against United, a brace against Chelsea, a brace against the Spurs, a goal versus Liverpool, and another one against United. Erling Braut Haaland scored a hat-trick against Fulham near the start of the season, and a poker against Wolves, towards the end of the season. He played in only 31 games this season, the second-fewest out of all the players on this list. Recording five assists too.

The still-only 23-year-old is competing with his debut year when he banged in 36 goals in 35 matches. But for anyone else, the second-in-a-row top goalscorer in the Premier League award would be a crowning achievement. For him, it's supposed to be a failure?

Yes, the tally could've been higher if he didn't miss some sitters, but the Norweigan is still the best pure striker in the world.
