Record Market Values for Football Players - Who Were the Top Investments and When
Who’s most valuable player in the world in a way reveals who is the best. Or best investment. So here are the record market values for football players ever!
Yes, La Masia is the pride of Barcelona, an aspect of the club without which it cannot be described. Especially now, as the club is fielding three 17-year-olds in the starting line-up. But Barca is still a monetary behemoth that dictates the market. Even now in times when financial acrobatics need to be employed for FCB to register its big-name signings. Raising the question - besides La Masia, who develops the always-mentioned Barca DNA? Which clubs delivered the most expensive Barcelona reinforcements and had the biggest earnings in dealing with Barca?
Looking at only the transfers from the start of the 2001/2002 season, as the value of money hasn’t been so gigantically different as in the 20th century.
Barca brought in a duo of best friends in the same transfer window, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Maxwell. The former was the bulk of the total transfer fee Inter received from Barca - €69,500,000 but it was Maxwell who stayed with the club longer. Famously, Ibra played for Barca only for a season as due to the falling out with Pep Guardiola. Yet he still collected a La Liga title, UEFA Supercup, two Spanish Supercups, and a Club World Cup. Maxwell had an even bigger trophy haul than his more outspoken brother in football.
Another Italian giant that was the trading partner of Barcelona, in a main transfer that has a lot of asterisks and question marks next to it. Technically, Miralem Pjanic joined Barca in 2020 for €60,000,000 but unofficially it was a swap deal to a degree with Arthur Melo going the other way. Pjanic left no mark at FCB, but other Barca signings from Juve fared better.
Gianluca Zambrotta played in 85 games for Barca following his 2006 move for €14,000,000, while Lilian finished his career following 58 games for his €5,000,000, also in 2006.
There are two clubs that made it to this list with just one sale with a Camp Nou shipping address, but Santos is the only non-European club of the bunch. Of course, due to the transfer of Neymar. Aged 21 at the time of his arrival, Ney didn't just shine for FCB and become a part of one of the most recognised and feared threes in the history of the game with Messi and Suarez - he was also a profitable purchase.
After 186 matches and 105 goals and 76 assists, nearly a 1:1 ratio of matches to goal involvements - Barca sold Neymar to PSG for €222,000,000 after a mere four years! Neymar still is the most expensive player in the world because of that transfer, but he is also the most expensive player in history cumulatively. In those four seasons, Neymar won the Champions League with Barca, two La Liga trophies, the FIFA Club World Cup, three Copa Del Rays, the UEFA Supercup, and a Spanish Supercup!
Famously, Barcelona enjoyed what Arsene Wenger did with Arsenal and scooped a lot of its best players. Infamously for the Gunners - they did so often by underpaying and even getting players for free. Like the more recent acquisitions like Hector Bellerin and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The biggest purchase isn't the one everyone thinks of - it's the return of Cesc Fabregas to the club he grew up in, for €34,000,000 in 2011. Theirry Henry was paid €24,000,000 as he was 29 and towards the end of his contract, back in 2007. Alex Song and Thomas Vermaelen were each €19,000,000 in 2012 and 2014. While Aleksandr Hleb was paid €17,000,000 in 2008. Fabregas played the most games for Blaugrana, 151, while Bellerin barely scraped seven appearances.
The club mostly connected with Barcelona as its legends like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels also crafted modern Barcelona. In recent times, there have been only three moves towards Nou Camp. Frenkie de Jong joined in 2019 for the massive sum of €86,000,000 and has played 213 matches for Barca winnning each of the domestic trophies once. Sergino Dest didn't leave much of a mark following his 2020 move for €21,000,000 although he played over 70 matches for FCB.
Jasper Cillessen, although a heavily featured goalkeeper for the Netherlands national team, was only a backup keeper for Barca and has less than a season's worth of football on the pitch despite spending three years in Catalonia. He was paid €13,000,000 in 2016.
Another club that earned a spot on this list with just a single transfer. However it is Borussia Dortmund that is more satisfied with this deal than FCB after the dust has settled. And there was a dust storm as Ousmane Dembele was the most controversial Barcelona reinforcements in recent years. The winger famously trashed the house BVB was paying for him in order to force a move to Nou Camp. That didn’t raise any red flags for Barca and they gladly gave the €135,000,000 for the France international.
Many, many injuries and contract extension sagas later, Barca cut the cost and sold him to Paris Saint-Germain for €50,000,000. After six years at Nou Camp, Dembele played in only 185 matches! A total of 30 games per season on average across all competitions. His return of 40 goals and 43 assists was solid, but not with that price tag and the disruption he caused in the locker room with his well-known unprofessionalism.
A sign of a big club is the ability to purchase key players from their title competitors. Although their success rate with Atleti players hasn't been great, especially because Atletico won the title after the club sold Antoine Griezmann to Blaugrana. One of the most expensive transfers of all time for one of the most versatile players of all time - and still Griezmann couldn't succeed fully at FCB!
He had an unimpressive return of 35 goals and 17 assists in 102 matches, winning only a Copa Del Rey before returning to Atleti and becoming one of the most expensive old players in history. Four years prior to this €120,000,000 move, Barca bought Arda Turan from Atleti for €34,000,000! Yet the Turkish player only played in 55 games for FCB, scoring 15 times and making 11 assists. Still winning La Liga, two Cups, one domestic Supercup, and one continental Supercup.
Many of the cornerstones of Barcelona's dominance have been arrivals from Valencia. Key Barcelona reinforcements learned their trade at the Mestalla, none more famed than the Spanish legend David Villa. Arriving late at FCB, aged 28, or in his prime better put, for €40,000,000. Villa still scored 48 goals and made 24 assists in 119 games, often attacking from the left wing.
Paco Alcacer was supposed to have the same career trajectory, yet his €30,000,000 move in 2016 resulted in a mere 15 goals across 50 matches. Andre Gomes was paid €37,000,000 the same year, but left an even smaller mark - 78 matches, three goals, and four assists. The €26,000,000 paid Neto in 2019 played only 21 games, while the €20,000,000 purchase Jeremy Mathieu had a good stretch of 91 matches. However, the best Barca transfer from Valencia isn't Villa, it's the €14,000,000 put into Jordi Alba back in 2012, as the left-back played 459 games for FCB, scoring 27 goals and making 99 assists!
Sevilla is another building block of Barcelona, with the most important bricks bought from Andalusia of course the €35,500,000 paid for Dani Alves in 2008. As he played in 408 matches for Barca, making 105 assists, lifting three Champions League trophies and six La Liga, amongst others. Another iconic player for Barca was Ivan Rakitic, with 310 games for FCB, 35 goals and 42 assists, although always in the shadow of bigger midfield names. All that for €18,000,000.
Adriano was another underrated Barca player, getting to 189 matches following his €9,500,000 move in 2010. Same goes for Seydou Keita, as he played 188 matches for Barca and was only paid €14,000,000 in 2008. Clement Lenglet wasn't with Barca during its best years, getting "just" one of each three of the domestic trophies, but played 160 matches following his €35,900,000 move in 2018. Jules Kounde was the priciest signing at €50,000,000 in 2022, but has already played in 91 games.
Aleix Vidal at €17,000,000 has been the least impactful signing from Roman Sanchez Pijuan in 2015, but overall Sevilla is the best market for Barca.
Not a lot of similarities are shared between Barca and LFC, but the Spanish side’s recruitment team still big targets at Anfield.
Twice they were dead right, firstly in 2010 with a massive steal getting Javier Mascherano at €20,000,000 when he was 26. The DM played 334 matches for Barca, winning two CL and five La Liga trophies. Then they really hit gold four years later when €81,720,000 purchase of Luis Suarez seemed like a bargain at the end. The Uruguayan scored 195 goals and made 113 assists in 283 matches for Barca.
The luck didn't continue four years on, as Barca got Philippe Coutinho for €135,000,000 in a move that could've been much more expensive had the Brazilian hit it off. But he didn't and became one of the biggest transfer flops of all time. In just 106 matches, he scored 25 goals and made 14 assists.
