Vlahovic equals Ronaldo's calendar year goals record just 365 days after CR7 set it, one game left to beat it!

The end of 2020 saw Cristiano Ronaldo set an impressive record for most Serie A goals scored in a year since 1961, at 33. Yet just a year later, his record has been equalled and is in danger of getting broken. Dusan Vlahovic has been proving that he is far from a one-season wonder and has continued and improved his goalscoring form to the other part of 2021, reaching 33 goals himself.

His Fiorentina battled to a 2:2 draw with Sassuolo after going two goals behind. Vlahovic struck the first goal for Viola in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, slotting the left-footed shot high behind the keeper. The young striker was involved in the conundrum leading to Fiorentina's second goal, scored by the assistee for the first - Lucas Torreira.

Vlahovic has hence scored in all his last six Serie A appearances, and only one Fiorentina player has done better in a single Italian league season, the great Gabriel Batistuta, bagging in 11 in a row in 1994.

Yet not even Gabigol came to the calendar goals numbers that Vlahovic has put in during 2021 in Serie A. Leading the goalscoring charts in Italy, the Serbian has scored 16 goals in this season, the rest in the second part of the previous.

Reaching the record set by one of the two greatest players to ever do it, yet it has to be stressed that Vlahovic did it for Fiorentina. Although Juve of last season wasn't impressive, Ronaldo's record was half-set in the title-winning year for the Old Lady under Maurizio Sarri. While Vlahovic played under three different managers in 2021, Cesare Prandelli, Guiseppe Iachini, and now Vincenzo Italiano.

Vlahovic now has one game remaining in 2021 to try and beat the record. Viola has a match against Verona coming up on the 22nd December, with the hosts on a bad slump of three defeats. Furthermore, Hellas Verona conceded 10 goals in the last four matches.

The striker is a target for many top European clubs with his contract expiring in 2023 and Viola forced to sell him in the next two transfer windows. As the 21-year-old refused their contract offers that would've made him the highest-paid Fiorentina player ever. With Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham, both Manchester clubs, and Juventus interested, Vlahovic has plenty of options.

Real Madrid player on loan at Fiorentina Alvaro Odriozola has been impressed by the Serbian, calling him a phenomenon, while the fellow compatriot Sergej Milinkovic-Savic labelled him as one of the future greats.
