Ajax is best in the top 10 leagues on goals scored and conceded: De Boer claims the team is third-best in Europe

In the shadow of Liverpool dismantling Manchester United, another European side absolutely dominated their major derby with the same result. Ajax humiliated PSV 5:0 and took revenge on this year's Supercup loss of 4:0. But the Amsterdam bunch hasn't been impressive in just the one match. Across Europe's top 10 leagues, Ajax is the team with the most goals scored and least conceded!

The scoring aspect of it is perhaps not surprising and the 37 goals placed in opponents' nets is simply what the Ajax boys do. But conceding only two goals across 10 games is a precedent for Dutch football as well. It's this well roundendess that is making a lot of pundits claim this 2021 side is better than the one formed by Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong, and Donny van de Beek.

Former Ajax manager Frank de Boer believes that this side led by Erik Ten Hag is the third-best in Europe.

"I think at the moment the five best teams are Liverpool, Manchester City, Ajax and then Chelsea and Bayern Munich. PSG I think less as a team," boldly stated the former Netherlands leader.

De Boer especially lauded the centre-backs Lisandro Martínez and Jurrien Timber, amongst others.

"It's an incredibly well-played team. Daley Blind is used in its quality. The two central defenders are doing incredibly well, Gravenberch is, in my opinion, a great player for the future internationally. When you see what he does, how fast he thinks, I think that's incredibly clever. I think Mazraoui is playing incredibly well at the moment, a really top international."

This Ajax side has been impressive and defeated Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League by 4:0, whilst also demolishing Sporting Lisbon in the competition 5:1. In their domestic league, Nijmegen, Vitesse, and Sittard all conceded five goals while Cambuur got nine!

Yet there are those, like Marco van Basten who don't believe the team is as good as others make it. Certainly not capable of overshooting the achievements of the previous golden generation with De Ligt, Beek, and De Jong.

"Do I think Ajax can win the Champions League? I don't believe that. If you look at the level of the individuals at Ajax, I don't think he can easily join Real Madrid or he can easily join Barcelona. They have a well-adapted team, but each and every one of them is not at the level that you think. A good team has good players. This team is a good team, but I don't think the players themselves have the level at which they can go to big clubs," stated Van Basten.
