The Many Layers and Complicated Hierarchy of the English Football Pyramid Tiers
While all the national leagues have them, there is an aura of speciality about the English football pyramid tiers. The sheer size of it rivals the ones in Giza.
With the way money has poured into St. James Park with the acquisition by the new owners, it's almost like the public and the media forgot Newcastle has players. Notable ones. As new transfer rumours get printed and posted every morning, it almost tarnishes the reputation of the footballers already at the club. Yet, Newcastle United players have reached some respectable numbers in the most important metrics.
Even with millions pouring into the side and record-breaking transfers happening every window, it will be hard for the newcomers to replicate the success and stats the "natives" had over the past years.
With the 2022/2023 season still ongoing, five current Newcastle United players have more than 150 appearances for the black-and-white club.
Arriving at the club two years before the new owners, Joelinton was the club record signing, nearly doubling the prior largest investment's numbers. Since then, the Brazilian attacking midfielder didn't excel statistically, with 22 goals and 11 assists, yet his tenacity and work rate is what enabled him to collect 155 appearances in the short time. Of all the active players, currently with NUFC or not, he is 11th when it comes to appearances in the black and white shirt. His contract expires in 2025.

The transfer record signing before Joelinton, arriving one transfer window prior, in the winter of 2019, Joelinton is a mainstay for Eddie Howe as well. The Paraguayan has achieved 160 appearances for the Premier League side, scoring 25 goals and making eight assists. Now his contract has been extended to the summer of 2026 even though he turned 29 in 2023. Another aspect showing just how much he is valued at St. James' Park.
Currently on loan with Norwich, Isaac Hayden will return to Tyneside this summer and will look to serve out his contract with the side running until 2026. The defensive midfielder was bought from Arsenal's U23 side for €2,900,000 in 2016 and has since played 171 games for Newcastle United, 33 of which in the Championship. He scored seven goals and made 10 assists, mostly playing under Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce. Yet, Eddie Howe has only employed him on four games before shipping him out on loan.
The oldest of these notable current Newcastle United players, 33-year-old Matt Ritchie has been with the club since 2016. So he hasn't been the most important player for the side, but injuries hurt his ability to peform as well. Yet he has made quite the return during the times he was able to perform. The right midfielder scored 24 goals and made 33 assists in 198 games for the Magpies. He worked with the manager Eddie Howe in the past - 160 games under his command - but it's unlikely he will remain past his contract expiration in the summer of 2023.

A Newcastle United academy product, Paul Dummett has been the club's left-back for the longest time. Apart from loans to local side Gateshead and Scottish St. Mirren at the start of his career, the 31-year-old Dummet didn't play for any other club. Yet he has barely been playing for NUFC in the last two seasons, garnering only four appearances.
Although in total, he has 205 matches for the NUFC side, but seemingly he is set to stay at around that number as his contract expires in the summer of 2023. Still, he is the second most-capped NUFC player out of all the active footballers, still with the club or not.
Seemingly the face of the "old" Newcastle United that was going to remain relevant in the new era of the club, seeing how he was the captain and a mainstay at centre-back. Yet Jamaal Lascelles has played only 463 minutes in the 2022/2023 season. As he has a deal with the side until 2024, the 29-year-old might decide to transfer somewhere in the summer. Of all the active players in the game who have worn the Newcastle United shirt, he has the most matches for the club - 225. With 14 goals and four assists.
Yet he is certainly one of the Newcastle United players that marked the era before the new ownership came in.
