Willian changes colours but not the city: Gunners' new weapon out to prove he's not an antique

It was speculated for quite some time and what was deemed a bit too weird to be imagined is now true - Willian will continue playing in England, in London but wearing the right shirt of Arsenal. After concluding his era at Chelsea that lasted seven years, the Brazilian has signed a three-year contract on a free since his contract with the Blues expired.

Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta is ready to kickstart the club after the worst season in recent memory and he sees Willian as a player to help him do exactly that.

"I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us. We have been monitoring him for the past few months, we had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions and he is a player that gives us a lot of versatility, he can play in three or four different positions," said Arteta for Arsenal.com.

The Gunners’ technical director Edu said that his compatriot is familiar to him as they worked together in the national team and that Willian’s human qualities recommended him to the club.

Willian commented on his reasoning to sign up with the rivals of his former club.

"I like the way they play, everything is amazing - the stadium, and I think that with Arteta, Arsenal have a great opportunity to fight again for titles in the Premier League and in Europe so I'm very happy because of that. When I talked to Mikel, the conversation was good, he gave me the confidence to come to Arsenal. He said a lot of good things to me and that's why I have come to Arsenal," said the winger.

Since his international debut for Brazil in 2011, the player has gathered 70 caps for his home country, scoring nine goals.

While the move brings in a familiar name it also shows that Arsenal is forced only to sign ageing players or youngsters with potential quality. Although reputable reports from England state that the Gunners arent shooting low this window as their plans involve announcing the extension of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract. As well as that the club is looking for a defender, a central midfielder, and a forward. While that means some squad players will leave the team.
