Werder Bremen avoid relegation

Werder Bremen avoided relegation from top German flight on away goal rule after a draw 2-2 in Heidenheim.

The first leg of the promotion/relegation playoff ended without goals but in the second leg, they took the lead twice and still couldn't win.

However, draw with goals was enough for Bremen and they will have a chance to show themselves in a better light next season amongst the other top tier teams.

Last time when Bremen relegated to the second level was in the 1980-81 season, and it's also their only season spent out of the best competition.

Home defender Norman Theuerkauf's own goal gave visitors the lead early in the game but we waited until the 85th minute for the next goal.

Heidenheim equalized through Tim Kleindienst to give his team hope but Swede Ludwig Augustinsson put his team in lead with a 94th-minute shot.

The match wasn't over yet as Heidenheim scored a penalty in the eight-minute of the injury time.

But it was a final move of the two legs game, Werder could celebrate their stay in Bundesliga and they did it with big emotions.

Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt was visibly happy after the match. He praised his squad, especially because not many fans believed in their boys.

"I'm just happy and glad that we made it after all that," Kohfeldt said.

"We were dead so many times this year, we always came back. Every criticism was justified, but chapeau to the boys."
