The best and most expensive signing in 2018 for Arsenal is now going to Torino

When he arrived for a hefty sum of €28,650,000 in the summer of 2018 Lucas Torreira was the most expensive signing of the Gunners in that window. More importantly, it quickly became evident that he was the best signing of that window which saw Bernd Leno, Sokratis, Matteo Guendouzi, Denis Suarez, and Stephan Lichtsteiner all arrive at Emirates.

The young, combative, and committed Uruguayan was just what the often anaemic Arsenal needed. During the first half of a season, it seemed like the Gunners struck the bullseye with a young player after such a long time.

But Torreira's role shifted within the formation and his second season saw his minutes drop drastically. In the first year with the Gunners, he played 2,376 minutes of Premier League football, the second saw him on the pitch for 1,507 minutes. Although returning to fitness after an ankle injury suffered just before the COVID break didn't help.

Now, Torino has seen the opportunity to bolster their defensive side of the midfield and according to media in Italy, they've secured a good deal. Which means it's not quite for Arsenal.

Torreira will arrive on a loan with an obligation to buy after 12 months, the loan itself will be paid €12,000,000, same as the future purchase. Making Torreira a €24,000,000 signing for the second club from Turin.

The still young Torreira (24) is most likely not a pivotal part of Mikel Arteta's plans that focus more on attacking, passing midfielders. So when a chance rose up of teaming up with his former Sampdoria manager, Marco Giampaolo, a man who had a major role in Lucas' progress, he didn't overthink it.

Torino is having a good transfer window so far as the club got the once highly-rated left-back Ricardo Rodriguez for cheap €3,000,000. Then right-back Mergim Vojvoda for €5,500,000, experienced Serie A central midfielder Karol Linetty for €7,500,000 with whom Torreira already played, and then winger Simone Verdi for €20,000,000. The Bull is making moves.
