Sternest man to take them out of deepest slump: Fiorentina hires Gattuso

After going through an abysmal season by their standards, getting the lowest point tally of 40 since the start of the three-point system, Fiorentina showed massive ambition by signing Gennaro Gattuso as the manager!

Although the 13th spot is not the worst Viola has done, twice finishing 16th in the not so distant past, the need for a strong figure to shake the players was clear. Few better, if any, for that than Rino Gattuso.

The Italian nearly broke into the top four during this highly competitive season and only the final matchday draw kept Napoli away from Champions League football. But Gattuso was leaving nonetheless. Rumours of his move to Artemio Franchi were flowing since a month ago.

The 2020/2021 season was oddly hectic for Viola with Beppe Iachini starting the season, getting sacked, Cesare Prandelli taking over and improving, before departing because of personal health reasons, and Iachini returning to finish the year.

Gattuso has been confirmed as the manager for the next season but it would be surprising if Viola doesn't stick by him for longer. President Rocco Commisso commented on the new acquisition.

"I’m convinced that Gattuso – who is a young coach but already has lots of experience – will help us to progress. His professional and personal background shows that he will bring determination, competence and desire to our club. He will help us in our growth and his professional and human history represent for the club an important guarantee of determination, competence and desire to win," said the president.

Gattuso had a 56.79% win ratio with Napoli, his best performance ever with the Italian leading six teams so far. His longest tenure at Pisa, where he took charge for 86 games and had a win ratio of 32.56%. Yet, after it, he fell up and got to lead Milan for 83 matches, getting a win ratio of 48.19%. Under Rino, Napoli, in 81 games, the team scored 147 goals and conceded 93.
