Sergio Ramos becomes the top scorer in La Liga's history amongst the defenders

Real Madrid used the advantage of Barcelona's slip up versus Sevilla beating Real Sociedad 2-1 to grab the top of the table.

Zinedine Zidane knew a victory could put them ahead of the arch-rivals, who drew in a goalless match in Sevilla on Friday.

Hosts showed a real fight in the first half and frustrated Los Blancos but the result was tied after the 45 minutes.

However, early in the second half Vinciicus Junior earned a penalty after the foul was made on him. It was a delicate decision, but the referee pointed at 11 meters.

Real's captain Sergio Ramos converted the spot-kick to give visitors the lead and became the highest scoring defender in league history with 68 goals.

Karim Benzema doubled the lead in 70' while hosts clawed one back 10 minutes later when former Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino found empty space at the far post and powerfully hit the ball into the net.

Sociedad showed a good game but it wasn't enough. With another poor result, they are now walking away from the Champions League places.

"We're angry with everything but mainly with the way we lost, because the little details and the big moments went against us,"  Merino was visibly upset after the game.

Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, however, felt the three points were deserved.

"In my opinion, we were the superior team against a very tough opponent, we knew how to cope with them and how to hold on to our lead."

"We're so happy because it was such a hard game and when you win a game like that you should enjoy it."

Los Blancos have beaten Blaugrana and drew their other game against them, so despite the goal difference, Zidane's team takes the top spot in the standings thanks to a better H2H record.
