PSG to Real to Fulham

PSG to Real to Fulham

In one of the most unexpected moves in recent times, the former Real Madrid and Paris-Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has bolstered Fulham's ranks. The returnee to Premier League will hence have one of the better goalies in the league who is just entering his prime at 27 years of age.

Areola arrives on a season-long loan after spending one at Real Madrid where he defended the colours of Europe’s biggest team on nine occasions. Areola was even a part of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad, even though he was unused. The 195 cms tall keeper so far has three caps for his nation. Fulham has an option to make the move permanent at that.

A player with 19 Champions League appearances will defend his goal next season in order to combat relegation, not to win trophies or secure a European spot. But, when looked deeper, this is a smart move by Areola as he will have a guaranteed starting spot and therefore be in the shop window for all the best Premier League sides to see. With Chelsea and Manchester United struggling with their goalies, a move up the pecking order might be due next summer.

After spending four seasons at loan away from PSG since his promotion from the youth ranks of the French giants, he'll be happy to be a part of a smaller, more compact side where he will be one of the key players.

"I am very happy everything is done. Scott Parker called me and I had a good feeling. He said he really wanted me. I had a great energy and a good feeling here. For me the most important thing is the relationship with the coach. Fulham's a historic club in London and I've heard a lot about the stadium," said Areola about the charming Craven Cottage.

So far, in preparing for their return season to the PL, Fulham brought in a winger Anthony Knockaert for €16,500,000 in order to aim for Aleksandar Mitrovic in the box. As well as former Juventus man Mario Lemina on loan, defender Antonee Robinson for €2,100,000, and midfielder Harrison Reed for €6,600,000.
