Norwich's Buendia reveals how Messi asked him if wants to play for Spain or Argentina

Emiliano Buendia has been impressing the football fans across England for some years, since 2018 to be exact. But even before that, the 24-year-old had the attention of one of the world's greatest players ever - Lionel Messi.

When Emi was playing for Getafe in Spain and also for the Spanish U19 side, they clashed against Barcelona in a very dominant win for the Catalans. But after half-time, the Argentine superstar asked the young player from his country whether he wants to continue playing for the European country, as he did a month earlier.

"I maybe did something good to impress him. He asked: ‘What do you want to do? Do you want to play for Spain or Argentina?’ Quickly I said: ‘Of course I want to play for Argentina. I want to play with you – it is a dream,’" stated Buendia talking to the Guardian.

Championship Player of the Season, Buendia was the key for Norwich's return to the Premier League but he is still chasing that Argentina senior call up. After the talk with Messi, he had four appearances for the U20 side.

"The target this year was to be back in the Premier League, so that one is achieved, but everyone wants to play for his national team. It would be something very special for me. I work every day to try to be better and to try to get this chance to represent my country."

Scoring 14 goals and making 17 assists in 37 Championship games, it's clear that Buendia is the perfect attacking midfielder. But he also does the job beyond his traditional role, showing that Argentine combativeness in winning the ball back.

"It is something that is in my football; it has been in my blood since I was young. I always liked to score goals and give assists to my teammates but I always like to help out in defence and always go to tackle because it’s a good feeling when you get the ball back and you can go to attack again. I just enjoy it and sometimes I can help the team in these times."
