thanks and sorry again
No Bakker or Botman, Newcastle get a loanee and a former youth player for the defence
1.2.2022.
The deadline day sealed it, Newcastle United isn't all-powerful on the transfer market, yet it is run by a team of competent people. Despite all the riches, the Dutch talents Mitchell Bakker and Sven Botman couldn't be signed for the left-back and the centre-back position. Yet, the Toon Army can't complain about the man they got instead.
Firstly, early in the deadline day, Newcastle signed Matt Target on loan from Aston Villa. After the Birmingham club signed Lucas Digne from Everton, Target was moved to a backup role in the team and wasn't happy with the situation. At Newcastle, he might impress and earn a full transfer in the summer, even though there isn't a buy clause included in his deal.
The 26-year-old came through Southampton's school, playing 63 games for the Saints, 21 for Fulham, and then 89 for Aston Villa. He is a former England U21 international and is geared to push for the relegation battlers.
"My family have friends here and they've always said it's a football-mad city, so to experience it and be part of it - I'm really looking forward to it," said Target.
Secondly, for the centre-back position, Newcastle turned to the massive veteran Dan Burn, standing tall at 201 centimetres. Born in Blyth just north of Newcastle, Burn played for the black and white team in his youth and is in a way returning to the club.
He has been signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee of €15,500,000 and put a pen to a two and a half year deal.
"I'm buzzing to be here. I never thought I'd be in this position so to be a Newcastle player and to be around St. James' Park, it's something I've dreamt of since I was a kid. I can't wait to step out in the shirt and to see what it feels like. From sitting in the East Stand as a kid to now, it's crazy. I'm excited to get started," said Burn.
The left-footed centre-back became the fifth signing of Eddie Howe in the window, after Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, and Targett. In total, Newcastle spent €102,600,000 in their first transfer window.
