Mendy confirmed by Lampard, Petr Cech had a great influence on the transfer

Signing six players this season wasn't all for Chelsea. After getting Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva, and Kai Havertz, The Blues secured the transfer of a goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes.

Roman Abramovich paid just above €21,000,000 for the goalkeeper who only five years ago played football at a low level. Mendy has undergone the medical with Chelsea on Tuesday and Frank Lampard confirmed it.

"He’s having a medical as we speak. Subject to that being okay later on, he will become our player at that point," said Lampard.

As Kepa Arrizabalaga has failed to reach the expectations continually, making a grave mistake against Liverpool in the last matchday, it was clear Chelsea was getting their man. The €80,000,000 paid record signing has been quite disappointing and yet still has five years left on his initial seven-year contract.

Although Lampard reiterated that 28-year-old Mendy is not his replacement but his competition.

"With Mendy coming in, it’s more competition so every reaction will have to be positive around that for Kepa and for Mendy to push to try and play in this team. We know the standards that are required of a goalkeeper in this team and we have to push for that."

Although it is to be expected that Mendy will at the very least get some starts quickly upon his arrival to wake up Kepa. Especially as the Senegalese goalkeeper has better stats than the 25-year-old Kepa.

Mendy kept nine clean sheets in 24 Ligue 1 appearances, compared to Kepa's eight cleans sheets in 33 Premier League games. Mendy's save percentage was 76.3% and he conceded a goal every 114 minutes. Kepa's save percentage was 53.5%, conceding a goal every 63 minutes.

Lampard revealed that the old Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech played a role in recommending Mendy. Cech is now a technical and performance advisor for Chelsea and played for Rennes himself before joining the London club.

"Petr was important in that because goalkeeper is a very particular position and he was the best in the world at that position for a long time so he's certainly had a big say in this situation from my point of view. I lean heavily on him when it comes to the goalkeepers day-to-day and planning for the future so he was very influential," said the English manager.

Lamps also said that the two newcomers Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva are now at his full disposal while Hakim Ziyech is close too. Now Chelsea have 11 days to try and secure Declan Rice.
