Lille usually sells players for fortunes, now they bought a striker for one

Nicolas Pepe last summer to Arsenal for €80,000,000. Rafael Leao to Milan also last summer to Milan for €23,000,000. Thiago Mendes to Lyon for just a million fewer. Yves Bissouma was sold to Brighton for €16,900,000 two summers ago. And of course the massive sale of Victor Osimhen to Napoli for another €80,000,000. Lille has become a powerhouse of sales. But now the team has also bought a player for an impressively high fee.

Jonathan David arrives from Gent in a deal worth €31,500,000! A 20-year-old striker who played two seasons in the Belgian division and scored 45 goals in 60 matches overall. The last season saw him score 21 of those goals in 33 games.

But it's in the Osimhen sale that lays the secret to Jonathan's transfer. It was Victor who was bought from another Belgian club - RSC Charleroi - for a then club-record just a summer ago. His value quadrupled in just a season. If the same happens for Jonathan David he will be sold for €120,000,000! Not a bad bet to make.

All of this transfer noise Lille's making is due to the sporting director Luis Campos, who was Monaco's sporting director in a time when the club from Stade Louis II flipped Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, and Kylian Mbappe.

David didn't hide that his involvement in the club - which started in 2016 when Gerard Lopez bought Lille - played a major role in him accepting the offer.

"I know the project that has been put into place at Lille by the president, Luis Campos and Christophe Galtier. There is a very good team with good players. I want to play and improve, and I think that this is the best place to do that. I am a player who knows how to position himself on the pitch. I like to play with my strengths: technique and pace notably. I can’t wait to meet the fans. Allez le LOSC!" said the 20-year-old.

This Brooklyn-born Haitian David grew up in Canada and has already represented the country on the A level and scored 11 goals in just 12 matches. He already has continental experience and has scored seven times in 17 Europa League games in the last two seasons.
