Leeds buy a reserve centre-back honed at Real for €25,000,000

After conceding seven goals in the first two games of their returning Premier League season, Leeds United decided to splash the cash on a defensive signing. Their Spanish sporting director Victor Orta chose a player from his country - Diego Llorente.

The 27-year-old is thought to be a reserve option for the starting centre-back pairing Robin Koch and Liam Cooper, although he didn't come for cheap. Real Sociedad will earn €25,000,000 on a player they bought for €7,000,000 three years ago from their namesake from Madrid.

The champions of Spain will also get 30% of this deal, around €4,000,000 due to a clause they had in place. Sociedad confirmed the transfer across the social media and wished good fortune to the player who expressed his thanks to the side and the city as well.

Llorente is a product of Real's youth academy, having spent 10 years there between 2002 and 2012 before moving on to the giant's C and B squads. Playing 63 matches for Real Madrid Castilla. He even made two La Liga appearances for actual Los Blancos before moving on loans and then permanently.

Playing as a loanee for Rayo Vallecano and Malaga, as well as a full-fledged player of Sociedad and Madrid, Llorente gathered 138 appearances in La Liga.

Llorente can also play in midfield and is the seventh signing the new Premier League club made. Forward Rodrigo arrived from Valencia in the biggest deal worth €30,000,000, Helder Costa arrived from Wolves for €17,700,000, another centre-back Robin Koch was paid €13,000,000 to Freiburg. Based on fees alone it would be expected that Llorente benches Koch but English media claims that will not be the case.

Jack Harrison was a loan from Manchester City, teenage forward Joe Gelhardt was paid one million, and 20-year-old goalie Illan Meslier arrived from Lorient for €6,500,000.
