League One and Two Matchday Previews and Expert Betting Tips

23.3.2022.   14:37

With no Premier League and Championship matches this weekend due to the international break, we take a look at the key games across League One and Two, providing predictions and expert betting tips for each.

There is so much still to play for in both divisions, with promotion races and relegation scraps still wide open, this weekend is shaping up to be crucial in deciding things at either end of the table in League One and Two.

Here are our picks of the weekend's action and expert betting tips for lower league games…

League One Betting Tips

Sheffield Wednesday vs Cheltenham

The Owls face the Robins in what is a must-win game for Darren Moore’s side as they continue to push hard for a place in the playoffs. Wednesday can take advantage of the fact Sunderland's games with Rotherham have been postponed due to international call ups and leapfrog their rivals with a victory.

The Yorkshire club are just one point behind the Black Cats (who currently sit in sixth) with a game in hand. Plus with Wycombe Wanderers breathing down their necks, it is imperative that they get a win here. As expected, a home win is priced at short odds of 4/6, with Wednesday being the big favourites. If you are wanting a greater return on bets, the in-form Saido Berahino to score any comes in at 8/5.

Ipswich Town vs Plymouth Argyle

The Argle are flying high this season with a playoff palace well within their sights. The Tractor boys on the other hand have had an under-par campaign in the third tier, currently sitting some way off the top six. That will disappoint fans as the club invested in several new signings to get them out of League One at the first time of asking.

It's no surprise that Plymouth are favourites going into this one at 13/5 while the home side are priced at Evens. With both sides having a tendency to concede goals, an away win with both teams to score could be worth a punt at good odds of 8/1.

Doncaster vs Charlton

Now we come to what is a crucial fixture for Doncaster Rovers in their fight to avoid relegation to League Two. Rovers have had a woeful few years, going from one-time promotion contenders to one of the worst sides in the division. Charlton meanwhile have also had an underwhelming campaign, sitting clear of relegation, but well short of the playoffs, where they would aim to be.

Charlton are heavy favourites for this clash at 19/20 and they enter it in good form, winning their last two games. With Donny having it all to do to stay up, you’d expect them to go for the win, which might leave their weak defence exposed. With that in mind, a bet on over 3.5 match goals could be the way to go at odds of 5/2.

League Two Betting Tips

Exeter City vs Stevenage

An absolutely crucial match that affects the top and bottom of the League. Exeter are chasing an automatic promotion spot hard this year and need to win this one with many teams within three points of them. Stevenage meanwhile are battling for their lives at the other end of the table. They are winless in their last five and need this to change if they are to climb out of the relegation places.

The Grecians are strong favourites to win this one, which is unsurprising. We’d recommend a Half-Time/ Full-Time bet of Exeter-Exeter getting you odds of 21/10. Alternatively, Exeter’s Matt Jay is priced at 5/4 to score anytime in the match.

Colchester vs Tranmere

Another game that should have big implications at both ends of the table as relegation-threatened Colchester take on playoff hopefuls Tranmere. The home side are looking to bounce back from two straight league defeats, while the away side are looking to maintain their form and clinch a playoff place, which they currently occupy.

Interestingly though, both sides are priced the same at 13/8 to get three points, while the draw comes in at 9/4. Seen as Tranmere are the side more in form, we’d opt for again for a Half-time/Full-Time bet of Tranmere-Tranmere, which would return 5/1.

Port Vale vs Sutton United

This fixture promises to be a decisive one in the race for the top six as two of the chasing pack go head to head. Both clubs are well within reach of the playoffs but currently sit just behind the teams occupying the converted positions. This one is hard to predict with Port Vale and Sutton United in equally patchy form this season.

That will need to change if either club is to achieve their playoff dreams come the end of the campaign. The home side are 11/10 favourites for this one, while the away side will get you odds of 5/2, which could be worth a chance, given how unpredictable this clash is set to be.
