James quits on European football early, aged only 30: A move to Qatar official

James Rodriguez was the subject of one of the most interesting transfers last summer when he joined Everton from Real Madrid for free. In 2021, his career took the biggest nosedive as the 30-year-old has decided to depart from top football and has joined the Qatari side Al-Rayyan.

Rodriguez was on a two-year deal with Everton, with an option for a third written in the contract. Yet as soon as Carlo Ancelotti made a shock move back to Santiago Bernabeu, Rodriguez's time at the Goodison was ticking.

The playmaker played 26 games for the Toffees, scoring six and making nine assists yet the fans won't be fond of his time here because of how it ended. During the summer, on Twitch, Rodriguez made several comments that showed a complete disregarded for the club he was still representing. In August, with the season well underway, the Colombian star didn't even know who his team was playing next.

Once a superstar, Rodriguez's career has hit the lowest part after a move to the Middle East where the transfer window is still open. It's reported that Everton will earn €8,000,000 for the player who last year became their highest-paid player ever. Rodriguez will surely earn a massive sum at his new club, as he was willing to leave the paycheck coming in from Liverpool.

At Al-Rayyan, Rodriguez will be managed by the former Paris Saint-Germain manager and Manchester United defender Laurent Blanc. The club he joins is well-known in that part of the world but finished third in the domestic Qatar Stars League last season.

Rodriguez's most notable or recognizable teammate at the new club will be Yacine Brahimi, the Algerian international who played over 200 games for Porto.
