Huge blow to Milan's title aspirations: Kjaer out injured for the season!

Landing at San Siro for the first time in January of 2020, Simon Kjaer quickly became a vital part of Milan. The Danish footballer played a half-season on loan, then made his switch permanent in the summer of 2020 for a small fee of €3,600,000. Playing 72 games for Rossoneri in total so far, Kjaer's impact on Stefano Pioli's team can't be understated.

Now, the second-placed team of Serie A has suffered a massive blow to their title aspirations as Kjaer is out for the season! The centre-back suffered a knee injury early in the game against Genoa and had to undergo a surgery on his cruciate ligaments and that his state will be evaluated after six months. Meaning that the season is over for the 32-year-old.

Team manager Stefano Pioli addressed the situation.

"We know the qualities of the player and the depth of the person. His presence in the team is very important due to his charisma, personality and being able to say things at the right time. We are very close to Simon, we are worried for him, but also aware that everything will be fine and that he will overcome these difficulties because he’s a strong person," stated the Italian.

Even Milan's greatest rivals Inter issued a message of encouragement to the captain of Denmark, as he was the first to react to their player Christian Eriksen collapsing on the pitch at the Euros.

"A champion is not recognised only by how he plays football. Come back soon Simon, we are waiting for you at San Siro to give you the applause you deserve."

Milan now has three centre-backs in the team: Allesio Romagnoli, Fikayo Tomori, and Matteo Gabbia. With Pioli confirming that the team will look at CB players in the transfer market.

Reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that Milan's long-term transfer target Nikola Milenkovic of Fiorentina now has a release clause in his contract, after extending his deal this summer. The Serbian international is available for only €15,000,000, yet other parties like Tottenham are interested.

Considering Spurs also lost a centre-back player, the race could get hot in January.
