Hat-trick hero Depay opens door to leaving Lyon, Barca might be an option

We have the first major negative result of the COVID-19 caused cancellation of the Ligue 1 season. As the former year was nullified it left some highly ambitious clubs without European football this year. Case in point, Champions League semifinalists notoriously finished the season ninth-placed. Now, they are going to pay for the country's decision to stop their fight to reach the top four as the club captain and key player Memphis Depay has issued a desire to leave.

The Dutch winger scored a hat-trick in Lyon's first match of the 2020/2021 season, in a 4:1 win against Dijon, two of the goals coming from the white spot. It's hard to believe but Memphis Depay has been at Lyon for four years now already, technically, this is his fifth season at the club.

After the Dijon win, reporters asked Depay about his status at the club.

"I do not see the future, I do not know if I will do the full season here. I have been here for four years, I became captain. After you have to look at your career, there is no Champions League. At the moment I don't know," said Depay without wanting to sound conclusive.

While Lyon has high ambitions and is looking to compete with Paris Saint-Germain for the title, it's now hard to see Depay being a part of that. The 26-year-old captain is on Barcelona's radar as the club is probably going to lose on Lionel Messi. With former Dutch national team manager Ronald Koeman becoming the head coach of Barca, it seems almost inevitable.

"I'm actually focused here on Lyon. I'm glad that I'm back, I didn't speak with Koeman yet. You know he's been involved in my recovery, coming to Rome to see me, when I was training in Holland he came to see me so the relationship is good anyway. Now obviously he is coach of Barcelona, and me personally I'm focused on Lyon because I'm here right now. I can dream of big clubs and we will see what happens, but for the moment I'm a player here and I'm taking great responsibility I think," said Depay.

Lyon's other talented player Houssem Aouar was less direct but the 22-year-old is also at the exit door, although his transfer might be harder to pull off now as he tested positive for COVID-19.
