Germany manager Flick: Hummels doesn't have the required level and quality in his game currently

Mats Hummels' return to the national team of his country hasn't gone as well as he had hoped. Not playing any games for Germany in 2019 and 2020 when Joachim Low decided to possibly prematurely cut some veterans like Thomas Muller and him, the central defender played six games under the long-time and now former manager in 2021. Including four tough games at the Euros.

Yet the new manager Hansi Flick hasn't utilized the BVB player yet and now he spoke openly about it, saying that the 32-year-old simply doesn't have what's needed to play for Germany.

"At the moment he does not have the required level and quality in his game. But we know that he has quality. I also know, when I see him like this and talk to him as well, that he has a few small problems," stated Flick.

Hummels is about to turn 33 and will be 34 for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar at the end of next year. Regarding the upcoming tournament, Flick did leave a possibility for Hummels to return into his squad.

"We are keeping the door open for all those who have enormous quality, who can help us progress," explained the 56-year-old former Bayern Munich manager.

Hummels has featured 76 times for Germany, scoring five goals and of course won the World Cup in 2014. This season, he has played 18 games for Borussia in all competitions, scoring once and handing out one assist in 1,308 minutes.

Hansi Flick has had seven games as the manager of Germany so far, winning all of them. The centre-backs he used were Jonathan Tah, Matthias Ginter, Antonio Rudiger, Thilo Kehrer, and Niklas Sule. While he has also called up the 22-year-old Freiburg centre-back Nico Schlottterbeck, although he is yet to make his debut.
