Europe’s Race for the Golden Shoe

7.4.2022.   11:3

As the 2021-22 season approaches its final stages across Europe’s domestic leagues, the race for the European Golden Shoe is seriously hotting up with elite names vying for the coveted individual accolade.

The European Golden Shoe is awarded to Europe’s top goal scorer across the domestic leagues with names across football’s greatest littered amongst the past winners, from Eusebio and Ian Rush through to today’s Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Inside Sport takes a look into the potential candidates who are battling it out for the individual prize, as it looks like the curtains have finally closed on the Messi and Ronaldo dominance over the last decade.

Robert Lewandowski

Appearances 28
Goals 31

Despite being 33 years of age, Rober Lewandowski has gone from strength to strength since his Bundesliga switch from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich in 2014. After winning the 2020-21 European Golden Shoe, Lewandowski looks set for pole position as the current season begins to reach the final stages.

With his Bayern Munich side holding a marginally comfortable lead on top of the Bundesliga and with a Champions League Quarter Final against Villareal awaiting, the Bayern striker will not be on the beach just yet with plenty to play for.

A 1st versus 2nd tie between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund splits a string of relegation-threatened opposition in which Lewandowski will be hoping to extend his goal tally even further and win back to back European Golden Shoe.

Karim Benzema

Appearances 26
Goals 24

Another striker who has found sensational form in the latter stages of his career is Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. With 24 goals in 26 appearances this season, the Los Blancos veteran has stepped up and filled the goalscoring space left vacant by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo with ease over the last few seasons. He has gone from strength to strength steering Real Madrid through an unusually tough period in comparison to recent years’ successes.

With Benzema’s 24 goals lifting Real Madrid back atop of the La Liga table as they look to seize the league title back after fierce rivals Atletico Madrid won last season, an attempt to close down the Robert Lewandowski lead in the European Golden Shoe will be more than welcome in the white half of Madrid.

After spending much of his Real career as understudy to Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema has looked resolute in his goal scoring form for his club breaking out from the shackles and firmly putting himself centre stage. This has also led to his return to the France national team after a positive Euro 2020 campaign in the summer.

Multiple top of the table clashes await Karim Benzema’s Real Madrid as they look to seal a league victory with a 12 point advantage. Wager ?10 on Karim Benzema to score in his next match and bet365 will give you ?50 in Free Bets.

Mohamed Salah

Appearances 28
Goals 20

20 goals in 28 games puts Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah top of the Premier League scoring charts during yet another sensational goal scoring season. After 32 goals in his debut season at Liverpool, the Egyptian has not looked like slowing down. With important goals against the league's top sides such as Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea, Salah’s scoring form has put his side well in contention for a second Premier League title in three years.

International disappointment throughout the season at the hands of club teammate Sadio Mane’s Senegal does not seem to have impacted Salah’s club form as Liverpool continue to chase down a Manchester City lead at the top of the table.

Despite being a handful of goals behind Robert Lewandowski, Salah has shown his goal scoring prowess this season to be on a level that Lewandowski will not be resting on any laurels as the close of the 2021-22 domestic campaign approaches. If Salah can catch Lewandowski and beat him to the accolade, he will become the first African to win the European Golden Shoe.

Dusan Vlahovic

Appearances 29
Goals 21

During his midseason move to Juventus after starting the Serie A season with Fiorentine, Dusan Vlahovic has been in fine form this season netting an impressive 21 goals from 29 league appearances. The youngest of the contenders for this year's European Golden Shoe at just 22 years of age, Vlahovic was the subject of much transfer speculation during the winter transfer window with many Premier League and La Liga clubs linked. Whilst it was Arsenal and Tottenham who had been the names most intently expressed, Vlahovic was to snub a move overseas in favour for Italian giants Juventus where he has carried on his impressive form.

The Serbian international will be looking to set a marker for himself as his career progresses after earning his move to the top of Europe’s elite domestic clubs, and will hope that he can help his new club reclimb to the top of the Italian domestic tree following Inter Milan’s league win last season and a poor season this term for the Old Lady.

Whilst Vlahovic is able to compete in the goal scoring standings alongside Europe’s best, he will have to wait until next season until he can potentially line up against them on the same pitch. Juventus’ disappointing Round of 16 loss to Villerreal meant that Juventus missed out on a Quarter Final match up against Robert Lewandowski’s Bayern Munich.

With European football on hold till next season, Vlahovic must continue his goal scoring form in his new colours to ensure that Juventus seal a top-4 spot come the end of the campaign. Bet ?10 on Vlahovic to score a brace in his next match and receive ?50 in Free Bets courtesy of bet365.
