Diego Costa to terminate his contract with Atletico, five possible replacements for Simeone

While Diego Costa only recently recovered from injury and seemed in good spirits, joking with Luis Suarez, the combative striker is looking to leave Atletico Madrid. As soon as possible. His contract is expiring in the summer but the Spain international is looking to terminate the deal with the club and move this January.

Costa only cited family reasons for the decision and it seems Atletico is going to accommodate him. With Atletico in prime position to win La Liga, Costa's decision is a peculiar one.

As Atletico's executives are ok with the decision, they must have faith that they would be able to sign a replacement. As their third option is Ivan Saponjic, a player who was barely used at his previous club Benfica.

Luckily for Los Colchoneros, there are five good picks for Atletico's recruitment team.

As Costa is earning a strong sum, his departure would leave some breathing room.

Most fans at Marca's poll would like to see Espanyol's Raul de Tomas as the new striker for Diego Simeone's squad. The 26-year-old scored 12 goals in 19 games in Segunda but wouldn't come cheap as the team from Barcelona bought him for €22,500,000 a year ago.

Rodrigo, who joined Leeds United for €30,000,000 seems like the least likely option mentioned. Although he did score only two goals in 15 games for The Whites and he is a team-oriented striker Simeone loves.

Another outfield option is Cedric Bakambu, a high-earner in China where he scored 11 goals with 15 assists in 14 league games this season. As his 2018 January transfer brought in €40,000,000 to Villarreal, the 29-year-old doesn't seem like the likeliest option.

But Arkadiusz Milik is. The left-footed finisher has been exiled at Napoli and is awaiting the January transfer window to move. Arek is only 26 years old and has six months left on his contract, making him the cheapest buy available.

But probably second-best, as Maxi Gomez of Valencia is made for a Diego Simeone side. Combative, physical, and a collected finisher, the Uruguayan could sponge up the knowledge of his compatriot Luis Suarez for some years before taking up his baton on two fronts. But even Valencia might have an issue selling such a potential, even though he scored only four goals this season. But considering the team he is playing in and the situation at Mestalla, it’s not surprising.
