Chelsea confirms a third major signing - Ben Chilwell signs up for less than expected

As we announced, Chelsea is starting to finish three major transfers this week and one is in the books - Ben Chilwell has arrived from Leicester City. Industrious left-back arrives for a sum far smaller than first speculated, another credit to the Blues' director Marina Granovskaia.

At first, it was speculated that Chilwell might become the world's most expensive left-back at a €90,000,000 fee but in the end, Chelsea got him for €55,800,000! While the BBC reports the sum is even lower at €50,300,000. It's not known as of now whether the deal includes performance bonuses.

Chilwell signed a five-year contract and he revealed - as is the case with the biggest managerial names - he was swayed to join Chelsea because of the gaffer Frank Lampard.

"I am delighted to be joining Chelsea at this very exciting time for the club and the manager played a massive part in me signing here. I think every player wants to play for a huge club in their career and I’m no different, but talking to Frank before I signed really made up my mind that I wanted to come and play here," said the popular Chilly.

Chilwell already knows all English players at Stamford Bridge, as well as N'Golo Kante from his Leicester days, so the integrating period is expected to be short. The former successful cricket player (until the age of 16) played football for Rushden & Diamonds until the age of 12 before getting picked up by Leicester’s youth programme. He also represented Huddersfield Town on loan.

Granovskaia was excited to welcome a player with both Champions League and Premier League experience despite being only 23. Noting that a bigger squad is a necessity for the condensed season.

"We are confident Ben will adapt very quickly to being a Chelsea player and with the fixture programme for 2020-21 especially busy, he is a fantastic addition to the squad needed to challenge for honours," said the Russian executive.

But Chelsea is far from done after getting Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Chilwell. Thiago Silva is expected to sign on a free before the week ends while the Blues are finally ready to offer €100,000,000 to Bayer Leverkusen for Kai Havertz. As they paid far less than expected for the Englishman.

Additionally, it's like Marina Granovskaia read our top football free agents article as the Blues are now frontrunners to sign Thiago Silva's centre-back partner from that piece - Malang Sarr.

This heavy transfer season isn't just down to Roman Abramovich's wealth but the transfer ban Chelsea received also played a massive role as it saved the club money. While the focus on youth also provided some PL-ready domestic players.
