Benzema injured, yet a forgotten player steps up for cruising Real!

Real Madrid fans were extremely worried seeing Karim Benzema exit the game against Sociedad in the 17th minute as the French international is leading the team for years now. The 33-year-old already played 1,687 minutes of club football this term, scoring 17 goals and making eight assists in 20 games! Yet, Real's depth was shown when the forgotten striker Luka Jovic got a rare opportunity in the first half and responded with a goal and an assist.

Firstly, at the start of the second half Jovic played a textbook one-two with Vinicius Junior for the Brazilian to score the first goal of the match. Getting his 10th goal of the season in the league, making Real the first team in the top five leagues with two players at double-digit goals.

Just 10 minutes after the first goal Jovic reacted blitzing to a conundrum after a corner and dove low for his header goal to set the final score at 2:0. Scoring the first time for Real since February of 2020 against Osasuna.

The €63,000,000 signing has been underutilized at Real and moved back to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan last winter. With these two goal involvements has been involved in the same number of goals than in his previous 22 games for Real! This is only his third ever goal from Real since moving there in the summer of 2019! After scoring the fifth in a 5:0 win over Leganes (30. 10. 2019) and the fourth in a 4:1 win over Osasuna (09. 02. 2020).

Prior to the match against Sociedad, he had six games in La Liga, yet only 71 minutes on the pitch, showing how much time he got. Yet with Benzema possibly out, Jovic could get the run at least his price tag deserves. Carlo Ancelotti spoke about the Serbian's involvement in the game.

"I believe that he’s a good striker, just like Mariano is. He has different strengths to Karim. He’s less heavily involved in the possession phase, but he's very strong physically and is really good at playing one-twos. Vinicius’s opening goal is classic Jović, he gets his body in there and lays the ball off and the second goal was a typical penalty box striker’s goal," stated Ancelotti.

Often criticized for his lack of rotation, Ancelotti addressed the many players who are sitting on the bench at Santiago Bernabeu through Jovic's example.

"I want to congratulate him because both he and the other players who haven't had as much game time this season are seizing and enjoying the opportunities that I will give them. For me personally, the joy following a victory isn't as big as it might be because of the players who haven't played and likely deserve to play. Jović was tonight the first of those players and that's the problem I've got in my role."

Real is now well ahead of its main title rivals Atletico Madrid with a 10 point advantage, so Benzema won't be rushed back and Jovic might enjoy some pressureless gamtime.
