Barca appoints Koeman and he's immediately trying to rob Real of a reinforcement

As it was announced, Barcelona has appointed Ronald Koeman as their new coach! The Dutchman is replacing Quique Setien who stayed at the bench for eight months, half of which were during the break.

Koeman had a contract with the Dutch national team and Barcelona had to pay €5,000,000 to the Oranje in order to sign its former player. The 57-year-old signed a two-year contract and accepted a smaller salary to help Barca face the fee to the Football Federation of Netherlands.

Barca always had a strong connection to Dutch football and Koeman is the fifth manager from this country to lead Barca, after Frank Rijkaard, Louis van Gaal (twice), Johan Cruyff, and Rinus Michels (twice).

Former defender and midfielder, Koeman represented Barca as a player between 1989 and 1995, scoring 67 goals in 192 matches despite playing in, or close to the backline. Most importantly, he scored the only goal in the 1992 European Cup final against Sampdoria to bring Blaugrana its first big-eared trophy.

Koeman began his coaching career at Nou Camp as first-team assistant coach and then as coach of Barca B in the 1998/1999 season. Following the stints as the assistant to the national team, he started his club managerial career, leading Vitesse. He transitioned to Ajax and stayed there for four years.

But since, Koeman hasn't managed to stay at a club for long, not getting to two seasons at Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ Alkmaar, all until he picked up Feyenoord in 2014. Then Southampton came calling and then Everton, both inconsistent and disappointing stints before he did improve the Netherlands national team and led them to Euros after missing out on a World Cup.

So far as a manager, Koeman has won the Eredivisie twice with Ajax, once with PSV, Copa del Rey with Valencia, and all of his other triumphs have been lesser cups or supercups.

He is also coming to Barca at their lowest point as the president Josep Maria Bartomeu admitted the club's wage bill is a problem due to Covid-19 crisis. He even listed players who are not for sale, not including Luis Suarez. Leo Messi, Lenglet, Ter Stegen, De Jong, Semedo, Griezmann, and Dembele are the ones who won't be sold. For all others, it's a possibility.

Eric Abidal, who acted as the technical secretary working on transfer primarily left the club after a mutual termination as he disappointed in preparing the team for the previous season. With Koeman in charge, he will try to bring Donny van den Beek from Ajax, a player who was practically already seen at Santiago Bernabeu last summer.
