A tight victory for Barca over local rivals to keep title hopes alive

Luis Suarez scores the only goal for a 1-0 Barca's win that prolonged their title hopes alive in a tense Catalan derby.

Overall it was a tight match which Espanyol will feel hard done by. Barcelona dominated the ball in areas of the field with around 75% possession overall.

Espanyol made the most of the small amount on the ball that they had, firing 11 shots to Barcelona’s 12. Both sides will regret their missed chances with poor finishing on show throughout the match.

It was a game that saw Espanyol relegated to the second tier for the first time since 1993. This would be a derby to remember, as the Camp Nou hosted the first derby behind closed doors and it will be the last for at least a season.

The game started off slow with nothing of note happening until Lenglet almost turning a ball across the 6-yard box into his own net, stopped only by Ter Stegen. The rebound led to a shot hitting the post.

At the start of the second half, Ansu Fati replaced Nelson Semedo. It was just 5 minutes until he exited the field after a studs-up challenge on Calero.

Originally, it was given as a yellow card but VAR changed it to a red card. Just three minutes later Pol Lozano would meet the same feet on his first start in LaLiga.

Luis Suarez scored the only goal as a Lionel Messi shot was pushed out by Lopez, Suarez was first to react as he slotted it home from about 6 yards out.

Lionel Messi nearly scored a volley but it was expertly pushed away by the Espanyol goalkeeper. Espinoso took Espanyol’s only good chance with a free-kick headed over the bar.

Vidal, Araujo and Braithwaite also made substitute appearances for Barcelona and Campazano, Darder and Wu Lei came off the Espanyol bench.

Barcelona will be disappointed after a rather poor performance, which they can’t afford in their LaLiga title chase. Espanyol have been relegated in the most heartbreaking way, to their rivals and they will really need to work during the break to get promoted again.
