A protege of Guardiola, yet more defensive than Burnley: Arteta's Arsenal hasn't scored an open-play PL goal in 49 days

Mikel Arteta spent his playing career on the Iberian peninsula and the main British island. He was an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City while the squad was breaking records for goals scored in a campaign, alongside most wins and most points. Yet, his Arsenal is playing like Arteta grew up only watching Catenaco football and lower-league teams.

The Gunners haven't got a Premier League goal from open play in 49 days, or 476 minutes of open football! All the way back to the start of October and the win over Sheffield United 2:1 with goals from Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe.

It was Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang's successful penalty conversion against Manchester United on the first day of November that is the club's last goal and the only bit of success domestically. Arsenal has lost three of five last games in the PL, won just one of them. In the last seven games, the team has four defeats and only two wins.

But perhaps even more worrying is the impotence of the expensively paid frontline as Aubameyang, Pepe, and Alexandre Lacazette haven't justified their reputation and price tags. In the last match, the 0:0 stalemate against Leeds, the newly promoted team recorded 25 goal attemptest compared to Arsenal's nine.

The Spaniard commented on the predicament he faces.

"It worries me, obviously. We need a lot of goals to win matches and be the top team we want to be. Without that, it is impossible. It doesn’t matter how good we are defensively. It is just that creativity and momentum. The players need to make that last action, which is the most difficult thing in football, but it will come," said the manager.

Arteta was expected to be the next big thing in the managerial game but now it seems that he can't get his team to do the basics right even with the firepower stored at the Emirates.
