Real Madrid and Chelsea will square off at Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano tonight in the first leg of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Both teams have been in great form since the begging of the year. Real Madrid haven’t lost a match in nearly three months: 12 wins, 5 draws since the start of February in all competitions, conceding just 8 goals. Chelsea on the other hand have done well in terms of results in the Thomas Tuchel era, cutting into the nine-point gap to fourth to currently sit three points above fifth-placed West Ham (and four points up on Liverpool).

Nevertheless in the recent matches both teams have found some difficulties. For Real Madrid it hasn’t been a great week on or off the pitch. Recent draws against Getafe and Real Betis have done great damage to their league title hopes and their main focus will now be on this competition with Barcelona looking good to win LaLiga. While Chelsea’s performances on the other hand have faded a little bit lately. A really poor display at home to West Brom — where Chelsea conceded five of the nine total goals they’ve allowed under Tuchel — was followed up by a really poor performance in the 0-0 draw to Brighton, but still they managed to beat City in FA Cup.

For tonight’s match Real Madrid probably will have back Toni Kroos who missed last matches due to injury. Eden Hazard is back healthy and fit again, though perhaps not quite 100 per cent just yet. He made a 13-minute apparence over the weekend, his first appearance in over a month and just his second in the last three months. However, the hosts will continue to be without the services of Sergio Ramos, Federico Valverde, Lucas Vazquez as well as Ferland Mendy for the huge game on Tuesday night.

The absences of Ramos and Mendy will be felt in the back, while I am not sure if Kroos is 100% fit, so I expect Real to have some difficulties against Chelsea tonight. Also Real Madrid will have to work hard to create chances against a Chelsea side that has been impressive defensively since Thomas Tuchel took charge. The West London outfit come into this following three straight clean sheets including a semifinal victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup.

On the other hand Chelsea don’t have major injury concerns with only midfielder Mateo Kovacic currently unavailable for selection.

To sum up both Real Madrid and Chelsea have been extremely solid at the back in recent games so given what is at stake, both teams are likely to play it safe, without giving away much to their opponent. As a result I expect a very difficult match for both teams and I believe that odds on Chelsea have value tonight. I don’t think Real will have an easy task and we might see Chelsea grabing an important result.
