Match date: 01/05/2021

Very important match for both teams today at the JobServe Community Stadium where Colchester United will play their final home game of the season against Salford City.

For hosts this match is important as they need just one point to secure their place in the league, although I do believe that they already have secured it. Southend their rival for survival is six points behind with just two matches remaining and I don’t see them taking two wins in last two matches especially in last match when they face a playoff chasing team of Newport. So 99.99% Colchester is safe, but still they would want to secure their own safety and not leave anything to chance with two games of the season remaining.

On the other hand Salford City occupies the final play-off place and they moved into the top seven for the first time this season with their midweek win at Bradford City. Leapfrogging Forest Green Rovers, seventh placed Salford now have sixty-eight points, a point and a place behind Newport County, and a point and a place ahead of Forest Green.

Salford has been on a good run last couple of matches since they appointed Gary Bowyer as their manager. Salford has picked up seventeen points from a possible twenty-seven, with five wins, two draws and two losses from his nine games in charge. They have also improved a lot their defensive line and they have the best defensive record in the league conceding just thirty-three goals in forty-four games. Under Bowyer they have conceded just four goals in the nine games he has been in charge.

Another important thing to mention is that Salford should be in very good mentality coming to this match because with the latest win against Bradford City they have won three consecutive games for the first time in club’s history in the EFL.

As it concerns team news, Colchester have a doubt over midfielder Brendan Wiredu who was forced to pull out of training on Thursday due to injury and his fitness will be checked, ahead of today's match, but Jevani Brown and Courtney Senior should both return to the squad after missing the defeat at Cheltenham Town, last weekend.

While Salford are without Richie Towell who still has two matches to serve of a ban following his red card against Mansfield Town. Bruno Andrade and James Wilson are nearing a return to match fitness while Darron Gibson continues his rehab programm.

To sum up I expect a tough and close game having in mind both teams style of play. Colchester would want to secure a point and they will try to make life hard for Salford, but in the end I expect Salford to continue with their great form at the moment and I see them more motivated for the win. A lot of money is invested in this club and if they fail to reach at least the playoffs it will be very disappointing. a
